Happy 20 Jordy!

To celebrate the end of Jordy's teen years,

the fam and I put together a list of 100 things we love about Jordy!

Every member contributed, and we sure had a blast taking trips down memory lane and laughing at all the funny quirks we love about our Jordy.
(Don't worry Jay, there is nothing embarrassing on this list... At least, I hope not.)

Happy Birthday beautiful!

1.     Her full name is Grace Jordyn Black.
2.  Her dad got the name “Jordyn” from a character in a movie.
3.  However, when Jordy was young, there was a little boy in the neighborhood named Jordan.  So, she     proclaimed that she would only answer to Jordy from then on. Jordy it’s always been!

5.      Jordy was born on October 9, 201
6.      At 4pm in the St. Mark’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, UT.

Small and Simple Things

In sacrament meeting last Sunday, this girl gave a really sweet and spiritual talk that I was completely inspired by!  I was so enlightened by her words of simple testimony, I just had to write about/share it!

The topic was on missionary work, and one of the stories she shared was about her mom's conversion.

Her mom was on an airplane and happened to strike a conversation with her seat-neighbor, a Mormon.
(The word "airplane" immediately grabbed my attention!  Haha, I love my traveling family!)
When inquiring of the reasons for one another's travel, the topic of the man's beliefs came up.  The conversation was fairly short and not preachy, but the mom was so impressed with his kindness and caring countenance.  So, she looked further into the Church, met with more members and missionaries, and eventually converted. :)
She has never seen that LDS passenger again.  However, her encounter with him changed her life, and all it took was a simple airplane-conversation to spike her interest.

I loved that story, especially since I have been blessed to have had airplane chairs as a second "bed" for me. (Oh, who am I kidding?  There are even airplane seats in the living room of my STG home!)  I have trained myself to instantly fall asleep once I am situated in an airplane chair, despite its comfortableness.

Just look at my adorable brothers!  Yep, this is exactly how I am, too.
Airplane ride = sleep time.

I should definitely start to try to stay awake during those long minutes and have a conversation with a fellow passenger.  I'll never know if even a short one will make all the difference :)  This story reminded me of the scripture:

". . . By small and simple things are great things brought to pass . . ." (Alma 37:6)

A short airplane-conversation (a "small and simple thing") ignited a conversion (a "great thing")!  That is such an amazing thought to me!  I hope that my own encounters with others have the potential to make even a fraction of the difference that LDS passenger made for the girl's mom.  What motivation!

Easter Weekend

I have just loved the fact that General Conference and Easter have been only a week apart!
My family traveled up to Salt Lake for both occasions.  We truly have been blessed.  Jordy and Bop live in SLC; my parents and brothers are only an hour flight away; and I have learned to really enjoy the hour drive from Provo.  I know our close proximity to each other will not last forever; so, we might as well make the best of it while we can!
Also, what better occasions to be situated so close to each other on the calendar then listening to the mouthpieces of my Heavenly Father and celebrating the glorious resurrection of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

This Easter, I was truly missing this place.

The Garden Tomb in Jerusalem, Israel is such a peaceful and sacred place.  I’m so grateful I had the opportunity to go there—let alone live four life-changing months in the country!
I’m also eternally thankful that I was able to experience where Christ was with my family.  Our Jerusalem trip will always be treasured in my heart.

While I am forever in debt to my scholarships, my family, and my Heavenly Father for making it possible for me to live abroad in Jerusalem, I have a firm testimony that I did not have to see the empty tomb to know that Christ has risen.  His selfless acts of grace, sacrifice, kindness, and mercy were out of love towards all of God’s children.  There are times when I definitely do not deserve the sacrifices Christ has endured on my behalf.  However, I have faith that through Christ’s atonement, I can move closer and closer to perfection—to deserve the love and blessings that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have bestowed upon me.

Easter 2012 was spent at Bop’s house with extended family.  Bop planned one of her famous family dinners, complete with turkey, cranberry sauce, vegetable mix, jello, Bop’s addicting homemade rolls, and loving family! :)

Jordy and my Easter present to the family were Kouing Amans from Les Madeleine's and donuts from Banbury Cross.  Yeah, we sure scored!  This picture of an exotic, gypsy-like version of Jay was taken outside of Les Madeleine's.

Look at the Betty Crockers we have here!
They are hastily preparing for the big Easter dinner.
Bop is busy rolling out the dough for her to-die-for homemade rolls!
Jordy and Davis are having way too much fun
cutting up strawberries.
Yum!

My Easter basket :)
The Easter Bunny knows me all too well.
This cute bag was filled with Reese's, Stride, new headphones, and nail polish!

Mom made up darling Easter presents for everyone--complete with her unbelievably-delicious caramel, chocolate-covered pretzel sticks!
I got my own Easter cookie from Mrs. Backer's Bakery!

Me, Mari, and Jordy.
Family forever!

Cookies taste much better when they’re made for others :)

I received another inspiring challenge from my M Com professor:
“Find someone who is more stressed than you are and do something nice for them.”
This challenge struck me pretty hard because I sometimes find myself caught up in my own little world thinking that there’s no one out there more stressed than I am.
However, as I was listening to this homework request in class, I promised to intently find someone who could use an act of service more than me to brighten up their day—I decided to rely on a little revelation.

I can’t believe how fast that answer came to me.
The name of a sweet sister in my ward popped into my head.
She’s a full-time BYU student, volunteers at a nearby elementary school almost every day, is a manager at a jewelry store, and is the leader of the Relief Society Activities Committee.
I worked with her on our biggest RS activity two weeks ago.  She is not only very creative, organized, and responsible, but she is also extremely in tune with the Spirit which guided the committee to plan touching and memorable events this year.
I am a witness that each activity was divinely inspired by the Lord.

I made up my mind that I was going to do something nice for her, but I was just not sure of exactly what to do.
Naturally, I kept putting the assignment off all week.
(I’ve been procrastinating way too much lately.)

Friday rolled around way too fast, and I was planning to drive up to Salt Lake on Saturday to spend the Easter holiday with my family.  I needed to fulfill the service task quickly.  I began to rationalize that maybe doing something for the girl in my ward would be too much work and that I should just do something nice for a family member while I was in SLC.
My conscience stopped me quickly.
I knew I needed to act on instant revelation—so I began making cookies.

I happen to be an avid pinner and fan of pretty much everything on Pinterest.
Hey, I’m a girl.  What do you expect?
One of my favorite boards is my dessert board, of course!
I call it I wish I didn’t have a sweet tooth because I know I would be a lot healthier and skinnier if that was true!
You can you check out the board here.  It's pretty good, if I do say so myself :)
I had stumbled upon an easy recipe for Cake-Mix cookies a few weeks earlier, and the perfect time to test them had arrived!
I whipped up the cookies in no time at all!  They are super easy!  I also listened to the Saturday-Afternoon session of General Conference while I was baking.  It was the perfect activity to do in light of this service!

The cookies were delicious!
My roommates and I loved them (and we’re pretty picky when it comes to sweets).  I also had a few random friends try them, and everyone had seconds. :)
Moral of the story: try these cookies!
Just kidding, the true moral of the story is that doing an activity (such as baking cookies) is always more fun and uplifting if you’re performing the task in the spirit of service.
The girl was not home when I dropped off the cookies and a card, but I hope that her day was brightened a little by them.
(Hopefully she was not on a diet, haha.)
I know that my day was much better that it could have been because of this small act of service.  Goes to show that any kind of service is the key to a great and fulfilled day!

So, perform some service!
And try these cookies:
I got the recipe from this website.

Cake Mix Cookies
1 1/2 cups of yellow cake mix
¼ cup vegetable oil
One egg
Frosting
(I used Betty Crocker’s whipped cream cheese frosting with sprinkles on top!)

Mix all ingredients
Form into cookie dough balls
Bake for 10-12 minutes

I Like It Like That

Jay had always talked about the amazing concerts at The Venue in downtown SLC.
I was always jealous.
So were our bros.
Good thing she made it up to us!
Hot Chelle Rae was scheduled to sing their hearts out to Salt Lake
 and guess who had tickets?!
The Black siblings did!
February 15 couldn’t come soon enough!

Warning: this post has A LOT of pictures!
Waiting in line
My siblings are the greatest—they arrived at the theatre three hours before the doors opened to snag a great spot in line. And their efforts did not go unrewarded.
We ended up sooo close to the stage!
Jordy and Ethan were front row and Davis and I were right behind them!
We were ready to rock out!
The Venue was PACKED!
Electric Touch: awesome bad from England!
Their accents were heart throbbing.
Jordy and I melted every time the lead singer said, “We’re Electric Touch.”
Don’t judge us.
Cady Groves—not sure how I feel about her…
I’ll give her props for her attempts at keeping the crowd entertained while her band had technical problems.
She also did a fine job of picking a good-looking guitarist.
However, she lip-synced most of her songs, and sung about murder…weird.
An hour and a half passed before techs starting setting up for
the band that we truly came to see.
The anticipation was insane!
See Ethan's eyes?! We just couldn't wait to see HOT CHELLE RAE!
Song list! We were so close that we could actually read it!

{Pictures of the band}
Some turned out great; others not so much.
In case anyone didn't know, it's pretty difficult to hold a camera still
when everyone around you is jumping and screaming.
Just a warning.
Their entrance was phenomenal—I’ve never been so excited to see a band in my life! Beautiful Freaks was their opening number, and everyone was off the ground!
We had an amazing view of Nash, since we were directly in front of him!
Yeah, we made eye contact more than a few times…No big deal.
And that is a true statement. :)

We couldn’t really get a great look at Jamie or Ian, but Ryan was all over the stage and sang directly to us many times!

Man, he has an incredible voice and a smile to make any girl’s heart drop.
Chills.
Butterflies.
I melted.
Each. Time. He. Smiled.

More pics...
Every song was a party.
They ended with Tonight Tonight
(Second time they sand that song, and everyone sang along!)
Then…
Ryan literally jumped into the crowd!
He landed in the opposite direction of us…luckily.
Despite the fact that I really would have liked to see Ryan up close and personal,
I’m glad I didn’t have to worry about catching him. Haha.
This picture would have been so perfect if it wasn't blurry.
The guys sounded SO good live.
I haven’t been able to stop listening to their CD.
I have every song memorized.
(Which would have been helpful during the concert, but whatevs)
However, I will admit that I think I like them better live.
Maybe that’s just because their concert was a total jam-sesh!
I seriously loved it.
The event was even better because I was enjoying it with my amazing sibs.
They’re so much fun to hang out with because we always have a ball!
 I sure love them!

The Venue is amazing. Check out their website to see upcoming concerts!

Our after party consisted of dinner at The Pie.
I needed to see what all the hype was about.
I’ll admit it; they can make a pretty delicious pizza.
Although, I think I had more fun taking crazy pictures in front of the sign with my sibs!
Best. Wednesday. Night. Ever.
Yeah, we like it like that.
